One Word for 2025
As we step into a new year, I want to invite you to pause for a moment and look back.
When you think about 2025, what is the one word that rises to the surface?
For me, that word is chaos.
That’s honestly how most days felt. I was checking things off my to-do list, moving from one task to the next, yet never really feeling like I was making progress. There was always something else to do. Another demand. Another responsibility. Another idea tugging at my attention.
When I sat with that feeling and asked myself why the year felt so chaotic, one central theme became clear:
I had not stayed focused on my purpose (more on that next time).
Because of that, I constantly felt behind. Pressured. Pulled in every direction spiritually, emotionally, relationally, and practically.
And it’s important for me to say this clearly: this was largely of my own making.
I’m a very driven person. I’m a doer. That part of me allows me to get a lot done in a shorter amount of time than most people. At the same time, I’m deeply creative. My mind is always generating ideas, concepts, designs, systems, possibilities.
So here’s the tension:
My creative brain fires off ideas all day long… and my doer personality wants to execute every single one of them.
It’s rather maddening at times.
It makes it difficult to stay focused on any one thing because there’s this constant internal cycle—create, do, create, do. And for a long time, I viewed that cycle as a problem I needed to fix.
But I’ve come to understand something important:
These are not flaws. They are attributes God intentionally placed within me.
Just like you have certain gifts, tendencies, and strengths that, when left untethered, can feel more like burdens than blessings.
Creativity without purpose can feel overwhelming.
Drive without direction can feel exhausting.
My creative mind and doer nature can easily take me down paths God never intended if they are left unpurposed. When I’m unclear about my purpose, those very gifts begin to feel like a curse instead of a calling.
And I wonder if you’ve felt that too.
So here’s my challenge as we move toward a different rhythm of life in 2026:
- Name the word or phrase that describes your 2025.
Be honest. No spiritual gloss. No pretending. - Then name the opposite.
The word that reflects what your heart actually longs for.
Here are a few examples to help get you started:
- Chaos → Peace
- Exhaustion → Rest
- Overwhelmed → Grounded
- Scattered → Focused
- Rushed → Intentional
- Reactive → Purposeful
- Busy → Fruitful
This isn’t about setting resolutions or striving harder.
It’s about awareness. Alignment. And allowing God to bring purpose to the very parts of you that feel out of control.
Next time, we’ll talk more about purpose—and why clarity there changes everything.
For now, sit with your word.
Name it.
And dare to imagine its opposite.
